OPENED TO-DAY.
Yesterday workmen were busy erecting scaffolding round tho old Sailors' and Soldiers' Home in Arsenal street preparatory to the work of demolition which will be well in hand in a few days. Soon a popular rendezvous of soldiera and anilors will disappear but what should provo an even more popular building has been complet- ed just round the corner and to- day His Excellency the Governor will formally open the Home.
The new building is the first on the new road which is being con- structed as part of the Praya re- clamation scheme. Details of the. actual building have been given previously and it is only necessary to add that, the architect, Mr. 'A, J, May, in co-operation with tho builders, Messrs, Kee On und Co. has succeeded in producing n building of dignified lines, one of strict utility and one housing every convenience for Service- men when spending their time ashore.
On the ground floor of the new Home there is an enquiry bureau, restaurant, reading room, billiard room and office. The restaurant, excellently equipped with square tables, is capable of seating 80 men. There is a service bar at the far end and a corridor lend- ing to the kitchens where the latest cooking and cooling cap- purntus has been installed. Carpett- ed floors, ceiling fans, a wide open fireplace and chairs for spectators ensure comfortable recreation. The reading room is also tasteful- ly furnished and provides a place.j where men can have quietness for writing purposes,
