The defendant was convicted, but before passing sentence the Police were asked if the medical oilleer of the gaol had made any statement about the defendant'a health.
Sub-Inspector Dorling replied that the doctor had not made any mention of his health, but after the last remand the defendant complained of being ill and was advised to report to the yaol doctor immediately after admis- sion.
"In passing sentence, Mr. Hamil ton said that the Court regarded the ease as a serious one, But in view of his age and his ap parent ill-health they were in clined to take a lenient view of the case. The defendant was obviously sick. A fine of $1,000 or 18 months' hard labour in default was, imposed. An Accessory Before the Fact. The defendant stated that dur- ing the earlier part of the evening two men took the bag to her huse and anid that they intended to leave it there. When asked what it contained she was informed that there were arma inside. They also told her that they did not have a permit for the contraland and she immediately told them to take the bag away.
The two men left, taking the bag with them, but later one of the men returned and, according to the defendant, must have left the bag behind. On the second occasion she was already in bed but heard the man's voice.
