At this, the watchman gave a pre- arranged signal which brought two European jolice officers into the room. and the defendant was searched and arrested. The woman was similarly treated.

In regard to the searching of the defendant, it was revealed that on his. person, was found a few Chinese banknotes of no value. These were used as wrappers 90 that they appeared on the outside of a few bundles of ordinary newspaper. The police officer, prosecuting in the case, pointed Lout that such bundles were com- monly used in the well-known -banknote trick.
