MASHION is backing us into the
Fashion has suddenly discovered that a dress has a back as well a a.front, and that whereas practically everything that can be done for the front has been done, the back is almost an undiscovered country,
Therefore, the couturiers are all excited and are planning all sorts, of things, from peacock-talled even- ing gowns to bustles.
That's why the new frock has very little to report about sleeves, waist- lines, hemlines or the points that are usually of major interest. And why the one sure way to tell the dress of this senson's vintage from one of last season's, is by the atten- tlon given to the buck.
To illustrate how Fashion is bring-
ing up the rear, look carefully and thoughtfully upon the satin gown at the upper left. It is of a delightful ' shade of sandal-wood brown satin, with a scarf effect which forms two panels in the back. The front of this frock is the simplest, rounded neckline and un belled blouse. The skirt is circular, and very short, and the waistline is ainus normal.
Nothing is allowed to detract from. the interest of those backward streamers, and having the centre of the stage, they hold it admirably. "
Notice ton, the backward treatment of the evening enpe at the lower right. This is made of transparent velvet in a shude known as apricot blush-which is just about the colour you would expect an apricol, to achieve if it indulged in a maiden; ly blush.

There is much talk in Paris of back fullness in coats, and of circular godets that will break that straight line that has been so insistent the fast few years, and if Fashion takes that hurdle, you may well believe that Hnes will definitely change, for the straight coat is the one" point about which the modern woman has been extremely firm.
A evening gown, of extraordinary
beauty both in colour and in cut, is shown at the upper right. It has the long line in the back that promises to be almost a rule with the evening frock this year.
The fall skirt, bolted very tightly in a deep hip girdle, is petalled like a flower and is so light and so airy that, when the wearer walks, it givea the effect of floating in the breeze.
The colour here is a deep Bur- rundy purple, and the shoulder corsage is in shades of pinkish lavender, in a decided contrast, and set with a delightfully sympathetic feeling
The blouse is mulded into a basque, shirred ever so slightly across the front, and finished with. #soft bow of chiffon.
Another interesting and insistent note in winter styles is the dinner jacket, which is worn with the dinner frock. The one Illustrated at the lower left is a face-trimmed cardigan jacket, cul on the lines of the sleeveless sport coal, worn with a lace-trimmed evening frock of bluck chiffon, with a very full, circular skirt, and the simplest possible type of blouse.
FOR
OR afternoon, the formal frock sti prevails, making it quite different from the type of frock that can be worn all day. A new colour is featured in the satin ruffled frock at the lower right. For want of a better name, its colour is called enamel. It is trimmed with a drop yoke of lace, and a pleated jabol which later becomes a ruffle on the skirt.
This neckline is very smart, and feminine, but It сил cooperate successfully only with the tal slender figure.
The short and petite may not feel entirely out of fashion's calculations, however; they may seek consolation in the little frock of light blue erepe ut the top centre. It has an all- round pleated skirt that forms a left side panel, which falls to give a alightly irregular hemline.
About the neck, sleeves and the closely molded girdle is silver embroidery in a conventional design.
