ROTHSTEIN MURDER
SECRETS.
DYING VICTIM DECLINES TO NAME ASSAILANT.
LOST £70,000 AT POKER.
A typical drama of the New York underworld, its terrors and its, loyalties, has been brought to light by the murder of Mr. Arnold Rothstein, the well-known Ameri- can sportsman. He was shot from a passing motor-car in a busy New York street, and died later! in hospital.
This tragedy occurred three weeks ago, and it was reported yesterday that the Police had effected arrests for the first time, after a Grand Jury, protected by guards, had heard a number of witnesses. Five of the witnesses were arrested and released on bail, Mr. George McManus being added
to their number later on,
Unaided by Victim.
It is now explained that the participants in the tragedy, in keeping with the rule of the under- world, have been keeping faith among themselves and the polico have been groping almost hope lessly for clues, unaided even by the victim.
While lying in a desperate con- dition in hospital, the late Mr. Rothstein was visited by Detective Patrick Floyd, who did his best to induce him to name his assallant.
Keeping Mum
Mr. Rothstein, who has known the detective for years, managed, in spite of his agonising pain, to conjure up a weak smile,
Placing his finger on his lips, he murmured "You know me better than that, Paddy,"
Police investigations indicate that the crime was committed after a game of poker in au hotel room for enormous stakes, at which the gamblor la reported to have lost £70,000.
Was It Fair Play? Suspicious of the methods of his fellow players, Rothstein refused to pay, according to the police reports.
After harsh words and threats Mr. Rothstein walked out of the room, only to be shot down a few minutes later as he was emerging from the hotel.
An hour after Rothstein had been taken to hospital his wife and several of his friends arrived with offers of blood transfusion if required, but the taring gambler died soon afterwards.
The most astonishing fenture of
in the arrest the crime McManus, who was held to be an intimate friend of the deceased, though apparently the polico have been suspicious of him for some time.
