the conclusion that the bank had sont the book with a shortage of cheques. He concluded that the bank had sent a book short of thirty cheques by looking on the covers of the book. The reason why he came. to that conclusion was because he saw some initials there.

Mr. Jenkin: How many cheques there were short?Thirty.

Mr. Jenkin: If the Bank had made the alteration because there were at most thirty cheques short,

three numbers ?--Yea,

Mr. Jenkin here pointed out that the original numbers were 236201 to 286800. If thirty were taken out the final number would have to be altered to 236770.

Continuing to answer further questions witness said he did not form any opinion about that In- cident. He did not make any re- cord of his discovery for future reference. He knew perfectly well that he had checked the book when it had come from the Bank, that it had contained the full number of cheques with the num- bera on the cover, which had not allered, and he had duly acknow ledged the receipt of it as full and complete.

Mr. Jenkin: Then how could you come to the conclusion that the Bank must have altered those numbers so that in truth it was not the full book you had ac- knowlestged 7-Because of initials there.

that the bank had sent a book which was short of cheques,

Will you tell us how it was that the bank could alter these numbers between the evening of December 21 and some time on the morning of the 22nd, after having received from the bank three weeks be- fore? did not suy exactly they were altered by the bank. I said I did not pay special attention to it, and perhaps it had been altered before and had not come to my notice,

Mr. Jenkin: The alteration and some initials was good enough for you, was it?--Yes. At that moment in my opinion, it was suflictent,

L

At what other inement did it strike you that you should look at something more than the altered numbers and the initiais? On January 18 this year I commen. ed to think a little more of it.

The First Time.

From the date of the finding of

that alteration on the cover on November 30, 1927, he never thought of the matter ngain until January 18, He did not consult anybody about the matter on No vember 30, as far as he could re- member. That was the first time Buch an incident had over occur- red during the eight years he had been in the Treasury,

Mr. Jenkin: Yes or No. Did you consult anybody with regard to this discovery of yours un No- vember 302-No.

You yourself volunteered that your conclusion was the same. To make it quite clear you mean that the bank had sent it short and had altered the number. Do you want to go back on that?-Certainly, The bank would'nt have altered that during the evening of Decem- ber 21-22.

Innamuch as they could not have altered it in that period, do you stand there and say that the conclusion you formed was that the book had been sent short and the altered numbers done by the bank?-I meant that when I first received the book there was no al- teration on the book cover.

Question of Certainty.

Mr. Jonkin commented that wit- less had gone back on the whole of his evidence. "Although you knew that when that book came from the bank the cover had not been altered, you thought when you saw the alterntion it had been altered before arrival?—At the time I had such a thought.

Is your evidence now this that when you checked that book. you did not see that the cover was in order?--I did. I am certain of that.

If you are now certain of that fact you were as certain of that fact on December 22, were you not?-I still thought that.

When you discovered the altern- tion you were still certain that that cover had not been altered when received? No. I did not think so then.

You knew, on December 20, that you had acknowledged the cheque book?--Yes,
