The Dowager Countess of War- wick was defondant In an action' brought against her at Dunmow County Court recently by a game- keeper named William Phillips and his wife, Martha Phillips, who claimed damages for ullegod illegal eviction from a cottage and for insult offered to Mrs. Phillips.
Phillips said he was formerly head gamekeeper to the Earl of Warwick. When the earl died Lady Warwick did not require him as gamekeeper at Easton Lodge, but told him if he would cut the hedges and grass by the entrance to Easton Lodge, and his wife would open the gates to trafic, he could live rent free in the lodge gato cottage for the rest of his life. After four years he received notice to quit, and in July, as he had not gone, Lady Warwick's solicitor and men evicted him, and his wife was pushed about.
