FORTHCOMING PRODUCTION BY HONGKONG AD.C.

Rehearsals and general prepara- tions for the Hongkong Amateur Dramatle Club's opening produc- tion, "The Sport of Kings," are proceeding apace, and there is every ladication of the earlier an ticipations of success being more than realizoit

With the advent of crook plays and the absorption of Trans-At- lantic humour, thu farce, as under- stood a decade ago, has had less and less appeal every time it has made its appearance before- pre- sent-day audiences, and it would indeed be a very daring theatrical manager who 'to-day would také the financial risk of presenting such post succossos no "Charley's Aunt The Private Secretary," and half a score of old-time favourites we could mention, to the modern publfe,

Indeed, our sense of humour having developed a liking for the subtle, it is a matter of conjec ture whether comedy of the more slapstick variety has net almost entirely lost its plate in our scheme of things. The farcical altuations our forbears were wont to revel in without question, are regarded by the modern playgoci as impossible and ridiculous, and aften spurned accordingly.

And so, with perhaps, the ex- ception of Oscar Wilde's 'classic of farce'"The Importance of Being Earnest"-the rollicking type of play has fallen somewhat into disfavour,

A tremendous

pity perhaps, but the situation bad to be faced by manngers and play- wrights alike, and the theatre- going public catered for according to their mood of the moment.

"Man, Mac" says I, "I'm sure that's at the bottom of your trouble, You dream ower much and suffer from inhibitions."

But he wasna' having onything of the kind. I ate as much cheese as him, especially at the Club where it could be got for the mere asking.

There you are. You treat a man for nothing and you only get dog's abuse, What's the use of a man having complexes if he doesn't know he's got them?

Most "haunting refraina” are the ones, that have been done to death,

The modern school of humor- iste were therefore looked to, and the required vein found in lan Hay; the wealth of avhose keen wit had reached the far-flung English apoaking races through his novels.

Unflagging Humour,

In The Sport of Kings," the celebrated, author has combined his well-tried ability as a novelist with a marvellous natural gift for slage-construction, with the result that farco though it be, the play has been built up from prologue to climax with a care for over-in- creasing interest and a regard for detadl usually only found in worka of a more serious and dramatic kind. There is a constant flow of clever, humorous dialogue, which never flags for a moment, and the merriment resulting from the abounding situations is of a kind to banish dull care.

The author has been happy in his choice, of theme, and the atmosphere is charged and ro- charged with the instinctive ap. peal that horseflesh, open-air, and Jolly crowds make in the hearts of all.

As already intimated, the A.D.G. has gathered together an extreme- y capable caste for the occasion, and all appear admirably suited to their respective parts.

The play will be presented at the Theatre Royal, on Friday 16th, Tuesday 20th and Saturday 24th November, and at the Star Theatre, Kowloon, on Thursday, November 22, the curtain rieing at 9.15 each evening. There is a short pro- logue to the play, and as the in- terest begins with this scene, it

hoped audiences will make an earnest endeavour to be in their seats on time.

Music Store on the morning of Booking opens at Anderson'é Thursday, 1st November, and the public will be well advised to secure their tickets early.
