FLOATING DOCK.

SAFE ARRIVAL OF THE FIRST FORTION.

༄།

Singapore Oct. 15. One of the most remarkable and, hazardous voyages in the history of towage was brought to a successful conclusion shortly before, 11 o'clock on Saturday morning, when the first part of the mammoth floating dock arrived at its moorings at the Naval Base at Seletar. To the fortunate fow who were privileged to catch the first glimpse of this mighty structure, towering above the four Dutch tugs bowing it, as it slowly hove into eight in the Straits of Johore, the impres siva spectacle will ve long in the. memory. It was a typical tropical morning a fierce sun beating down on water as smooth as, glass-whon the Naval Captain-in-Charge (Captain Mackworth), a party of engineers, and three press

men boarded a launch at Seletar and proceeded eastward up the Johore Straits to meet the first part of a dock which will be able to accommodate the largest battleship in the world. The approach of the dock was first heralded by a wisp of smoko issuing

from the funnels of the ac

companying toga and Boon there

Toomed into view the two walls of a gigantic structure, apanned by a latticed bridge. Gradually the great mass of steelwork took definite shape, the control cabin and cranes on its summit could be discerned, and then came into view the four tuge, Wit- tezee, Oostzee, Javazes and Humber "midgets pulling giant which slowly but surely were nearing their destination to make history by this Epic of Towage.

Mooring Operations. Commander Scott, who will assume the position of King's Harbour Master at the Naval Base in duo course, had boarded the leading tug, Wittezee, off Sultan Shoal on Friday night, and the dock arrived off the entranco to the Straits down. It must have required skilled seamanship for the tuga to traverso the tortuous' water- way, but about 10.45 a.m. the dock arrived at the twelve buoys which marked the dredged basin where the completed structure will герове. Nearby lay the mooring steamer Moorlark, a specially built and equip ped vessel brought down by the Admiralty from Hongkong, which was essential to carry out the delicate operation of mooring. This was n particularly difficult task, occupying many hours of skilled work, the dock having to ho brought completely round, with the bow facing the East, before the work of attaching the eight moorings could be commenced.

Monotonous Voyage.

men

Chatting with members of the crow, which comprised five Britishers and moventeen Dutchmen, a S. F. Press representative was given nome idea of how their time was spent during the period of nearly four months' passage of the dock, That It was often monotonous the freely admitted, an occasional game of football and one game of cricket

their sole sporting activi-] whilst much time was spent in reading) However, all expressed themselves as feeling very ft, plenty of walking exercise being obtained by traversing the length of the dock n few times daily, and in spite of continual dlot of tinned food and water that, for the latter part of the Journey, was pover really cold, they were remarkably cheerful, and their spirita will be still further enlivened when they once again Alep ashore after their long and trying journey. Typical Tynesiders, the five British members of the crew wore J. Ful- thorpe, O. Biggins (engineers), C. O'Neill, G. Pendlington (electricians), and T. Nicholson (plumber),

The Voyage from Colombo, " Although experiencing bad weather in the North Sea, in the English Channel and off the coast of Africa, nothing untoward occurred during the latter part of the Journey, Cer tainly, there was a heavy swell, which rocked the dock, after leaving Colombo, but, generally, there was n calm sea, with a south-west breeze, from that port, sleeping on deck proving an unpleasant experience at times owing to many nights of heavy rain. Three of the tugs coaled Colombo, and the fourth, the Witterec, at Sabang, the dock arriving at the
