"Gentlemen, on this happy occasion of the inauguration of our Chinese Seamen's Associated Union, it is in- deed our great honour and pleasure to have with us, at our dinner, guests and friends, and to find that with tolerance for the inadequacy of our preparations and the simplicity of our entertainment they have gathered in Buch genial comradeship and fraternity. "Before I conclude, I think It ap- propriate to declare on this occasion the two main objects of the Union.
"Piratly, we are to consolidate the diverse mass of the Chinens Seamen, purging it of all undesirable elementa, especially those with Communistic leanings.
"Secondly, we are to work for im- proved and orsicable relations be tween employers and employees, that in, between the Shipping Companies and the Chinese seamen working on their vessels.
"I am sure all of you gentlemen agree with me that these are objects that are worthy of our best attention and your heartiest support and 1.am confident that our future will be a bright and successful one.

Mr. James stated that with this new Chinese Union under the chair- manship of a man liko Mr. Leung, who aimed at the dispersal of all Communistic elements, there was no reason why the Union should not work in harmony with the shipping owners, for after all, the interests of the latter, were also those of the sca men themselves.
Mr. de Bruyn, who spoke in similar terms, stressed the need of co-opera- tion between employers and employees of the shipping business, which was bound to secure profit for both parties.
