CHEAP BANK NOTES FOR SALE IN HONGKONG.
A somewhat strange story of of a rich merchant being victimised by counterfeit bank notes was in circulation last night,
It is stated that a rich Chinese merchant, residing in Arbuthnot Road, through an intimato friend recently made the acquintaneo.of a stranger, who professed to be ex-
developed between the two and wealthy, Friendship trade and commerce wore dia- cussed..
About a week ago the stranger told the merchant that he had for sule some counterfeit bank notes: The price for $10 worth of forged notes was $4.
As fat no I can see, the Company always endeavours to provide eflceedingly cient service, and in this regard ono might also draw attention to im provoments carried out in the type of car for the comfort of passengers. The attitude adopted, however, in rospect of the issue of monthly tickets is astonishing. To many it in most inconvenient to have to obtain tickets from the Tramway Depot Office. If monthly tickets could be also obtained in the Central district m the closing days of each month, the office being open during the tiffin interval, I am sure renewal would be a much casior matter to many. To obtain nonthly tickets from the Conductors on the ears would, possibly, bo hardly feasiblo.
Thanking you for your couriery anti enclosing my card-Youra, eta,

GENEROUS DONATION,
TOWARDS CHINESE HOSPITAL CONSTRUCTION FUND.
יז
The Chairman of the Tung Wal Hospital has received a generous donation of $1,000 from the Asia- tie Petroleum Co., (South China) towards the construction fund of the new branch of the Tung Wah. Hospital,
Mr. Tang also learned from Mr. W. II. Bell, general manager of the A.P.C., that the latter may make a further contribution to- wards the fund, the amount de- pending on what other leading foreign firms liere do in assist ing the movement,"
Mr. Tang also stated that the sum of about half a million dal- lars is required for the building of this new hospital and so far
about $450,000 have been vol- lected. The work of construction is expected to be completed at the beghinlig of next year.
At first the merchant refused to listen to the story, but finally, when the stranger sold him $100 worth of forged notes, and when the professed counterfoltor per sonally produced the notes at.a money-changer's and, secured their equivalent the merchant yielded to the temptation.
suqsion the stranger ultimately After long negotiations and per-, succeeded in tempting the rich merchant to pay him $4,000 for a big consignment of $10,000 of the notes, promising that they, would bring him a net pront of $6,000. The dale for the delivery of the notes nrrived but the stranger made himself scarce, to the disappoint- ment of the victim.
