it is worthy of note that more that access to the lower deck which tions. 62,000 cars, are sold, 'serviced' or garaged in the course of a year by Shaw and Kilburn whose premises in Wardour Street are so well known to motorists visiting London. Overseas visitors are, of course, specially catered for by an arrange- ment by which, if a car is required only during a stay in Britain, a guarantee is given of a certain fixed price at which it will be bought back by the firm at the end of the period, thus eliminating a vast amount of uncertainty and worry.
No mention of big figures in the moter industry would be completo without reference to Singer and Co. who "from strength to strength go on." The accounts of the Company. for the last year show a profit of over £171,000 as compared with £140,000 during the previous year. The dividend is again 12% p.c. and, in addition, the Directors announce a cash bonus of 7% p.c. Further it is proposed to make a bonus dis- tribution out of reserves of one 7 pe. preference share for every two ordinary shares. Twenty years ago 1,000 Singer shares could be bought for £100; to-day these shares have, appreciated to over £20,000.
The last year was a record one in the annals of the concórn despito the fact that the huge new works at Birmingham have only been in full swing for the last six months.
Next Year's Programmes. Details of some of the 1929 pro- grammes are already to hand and an interesting addition to the ex-] Isting range of products manufac-! tured by the Arrol-Johnston and Aster Engineering Co. Is the Arrol. Aster straight-eight mudel of 23 h.p. This hus, of course, been evolved from experience gained. with the 17-50 h.p. 6-cylinder, which has sold very well during the year. As in the smaller car a single sleeve valvo engine is employed, this type being remarkable for silence and simplici ty, while a considerable amount of maintenance work is. eliminated; there being, of course, no tappeta to adjust or valves to grind in. The owner driver will certainly ap preciate the silent-bloc rubber bushes to the springs and Enots one- shot system of chaasia lubrication.
The Talbot 14-45 h.p. 6-cylinder. model was a success from Its first appearance at the 1920 Olympfa Show, and it is not surprising therefore, to learn that at this yeur's Show there will be no change In model or price. There will, of course, be a few detail improve- ments, but it is highly satisfactory to know that this successful "Six" will otherwise remain unchanged.

An interesting order for Jowett para consists of 14 care for the use of the Metropolitan Police, these comprising thirteen 4-seaters and a van. All these are fited with n patent free-wheel device of the Humfrey-Sandberg pattern, which is said to result in a gain of from 15 to 20 p.q. in petrol consumption, so their performance will be watched with particular interest. This is, of course, by no means the first order for Jowetts from the Polles as a large number have been in vie for some years.
The War Office has shown its satis- faction with Armstrong-Siddeley cars in the most practical way; by a repeat order. As the result of the Army Council's two years' ex harlence with a long 20 h.p. 6-cylin der model, sixteen more cars of the
