After completely devastating one block the fire spread across the roads in three directions and com. menced its destructive work anew. From the moment when it secur- ed a hold on the first block of huts there was no possibility of saving the other areas of similar Manila buildings in the vicinity. It was merely a matter of conjecture Swatow ....... whether the brigades, would be Straits and Calcutta able to prevent is spread. Into the business, district. This, how Swatow, Amoy and Foochow ever, was accomplished towards Sandakan dawn which revealed a scene of Amog desolation and waste almost in- Manila credible.

Ruin, complete' ruin, lay every- whore. In two of the blocks where formerly had been colonies of straw huts and single-story brick dwellings, numbering bun- dreds, not a stick was standing. Nothing but a litter of crampled galvanised iron, broken brick- work and, ashes met the eye. Tem-; porary shelters were being erect- || od on the border of the ruins and coolles, scavengers and some of the ruined families prodded with hoes among the ashes hoping to find some of their lost property,

Huge Damage.

Wherd once stood a famous tea shop of several storeys there now stand small portions of a brick! wall. All that is left of several amall factories is a mass of twist- ed machinery, Soveral huge fron electric wiring standards stand groicaquely contorted along the roud-alde, aflent' witnesses of the terrific heat which accompanied the conflagration.

The damage is difficult to peti- mate but as most of the destroyed dwellings were of the cheaper type it cannot be very extensive from that viewpoint. It is esti mated that over a thousand dwell- ings of all varieties were destroy- ed.. It is known that at least six | persons perished in the flames, one of whom was a Chinese policeman, many others sustained serious in- juzio. Considering the size of tho fire the loss of life was fo markably small.
