OPIUM IN BAMBOO STOOLS.

LATEST SMUGGLERS' DODGE. DISCOVERED.

The battle of ingenuity between one which, apparently, has no eil, smugglers and revenue officers is As soon as one trick of the smug- glers is uited nr exposed, another is quickly vented to take its place.

The smuggling of oplum in mooncakes, padded waistcoats; false bundles of firewood, among vegetables, etc, have all had their day. The latest trick, which was Iafd bare by the Revende Depart- ment yesterday, was the snuggling of oplum in bamboo stools! The drug is skilfully concealed fn'tho hollow of the bombons that go to make up the atonl. A superficial examination of the stool would ex- efte no suspicion whatever, for tho oplum id placed laside the bamboo, before it is made into a stadl.

There were no fewer than six Buch stools seized yesterday by re- venue officers on the Hol. On Wharf. Two Chinese were arrest ed and charged this morning at the Central Magistracy, but, owing to an insufficiency of evidenco, there was no conviction.
