MURDER OF A POLICEMAN.

·GUTTERIDGE CRIME PARALLEL

Berlin, Aug. 20. A policeman who had been mur- dered and robbed has been found

TO-MORROW, TO TUESDAY

The notelcok contained the entry, "Have been shot down by the mur derer." The last letters were written by a shaky hand.

About six feet away lay the tho policeman, stretched out on ground at full length, with a shot through the chest. All the circum- stances point to his having been shot by ila assailant before he had. time to use his own firearm, which the murderer took away, together with about £12, which he had just brought away from the police sta- tion.

The discovery of the policeman's watch beside the corpse suggests that the murderer had intended taking this, too, but had thrown It away as worthless,

Terrorised District.

There is one substantial differ ence between the present caso and the Gutteridge murder, for the clues promise to be of a much leng complicated kind.

:

The shot wound appears to have been caused by a revolver of the same calibre as that with which a rallway official was shot on Sunday at Tapiau, not far away,

There can be no doubt that this crime was committed by the same bandit whoso robberies and shoot- inge in the district last week cul- minated in the murder at Taplau. The population of the neighbour

by the wayside, near the village of hood is thoroughly alarmed, and Craussen, near Konigsberg, in clr-largo rewards have been offered by cumstances which are strongly re-both the railway company, and tho. miniscent of the Gutteridge case. local governor. It is thought that
