NEED OF WARNING OFFENDERS.
The police, by neglecting to warn ignorant Chinese of the Beriousness of offering bribes to officers of the law, were contribut- ing to the commission of the offence, said Sub-Inspector James who prosecuted a hawker before Mr. W. Schofield at the Kowloon Magistracy this morning,
The defendant was charged with hawking medicine without A Ilcenco and with offering a bribe of 80 cents to an Indian Sergeant. While admitting the first charge, the defendant denied the second, remarking that the constable. took the money from him.
In evidence, the constable said the defendant offered him $1 to release him, but witness refused. On their way to the Station, the defendant took a quantity of coins from his pocket and gave them to the sergeant.
Political issues were discussed freely in the course of the gather- ing and it was deelded to call a moeting of the Standing Com- mittee of the C.E.C. to formally adopt the resolutions decided upon at the recent Shanghal forencos.
