With reference to the recent ar. rest of Mr. Lillicrap at the hands of the local Chinese authoritics, I am, requested to inform you that-Router. the Chairman of the British Cham- ber of Commerce is in receipt of unofficial Information to the effect' that the case in qucation le now settled. It appears that the mat tor was only settled in Canton by His Majesty's Minister in Roiping bringing pressure to bear in Nan- king. No compensation is to be paid by the Chinese authorities to Mr. S. Licrap for the wrongful arrest, which in itself a rather an unsatisfactory state of affairs. Sir Miles Lampson, it is under- stood, objected in the strongest terma possible to British sub- jects being arrested by the Chi- nese authorities for financial rea- song and insisted that the Can- Lon Government be instructed from Nanking accordingly. We understand that the Canton Gov- ernment have agreed not to ar rest any British subjects for such reasons.
