whirled round at a spoed throwing out a mixture of grit and rubber composition in a stream. The back wheel ultimately had to be lifted round on to a rock that looked n little helpful to a rubber tyre, be fora further progress could be made. After two very similar rock studded gradients the engine of the machine got wedged in between two sharp rock boulders in the middle of the path. The.frame took the full im- pact of the attempt to speed over the obstruction, bringing the ma- chine to a dead stop from a speed of about 20 miles an hour, sending the rider flying straddle legged up to the top of the tank,

The next corner proved to be the worst on the whole path and neces- sitated Mr. Sangster dismounting. The gradient was for the most part 1 in 2, with no kind of a grip for the driving wheel. Ultimately after several unsuccessful attempts the machine had to be helped over this impossible stretch. Beyond the assistance mentioned over stret. ches which seemed to delight in in viting wheelapin, the Ariel forged its way ahead in grand style, the enging giving no trouble what-

soever,

The best part of the ride up came next when, without any trouble and giving a superb exhibition of all- round riding ability, Mr. Sangster hended the Ariel over loose stones, and huge boulders, which made the appearance of the path take on that of the bed of a stream.

This stretch which was taken without a single slop however, proved to be the wrong way and the Ariel was obliged to return after its most successful rion-stop run up the rugged path to where the path sud- denly turns steeply towards Maya San. A little more assistance hnd to be given on what was the last lap of the run on a particularly awkward hair-pin, and then within sight of the summit Mr. Sangster had his first fall in charging head- long at a barrier of rocks on à steep incline, in fact one of the steepest on the path. The torque tubes of the eradle frame once more saved the machine from severe damage, taking the brunt of an unpleasant impact. It was necessary, to help Mr. Sangster over this obstacle and then he gally throbbed on to the top plateau after negotiating the climb in 10 minutes.

This side valve model did ex- tremely well, thanks perhaps chiefly to its sturdy construction. There are few machines, if any at all, which could have accomplised this climb with no damage at all to the crankcase. For the entire time the climb occupied the machine was In low gear, but, not once did thu engine complain. 3

It is impossible to convey to the reader the obstacles on this path to Maya San, which taxes even the energy and limbs of pliable humans. The descent was child's play 'com- pared to the climb with the asal- stance of the two powerful Ariel bruktes.

An account of this climb would not be complete without mention of the way in which the standard Dun- lop tyres stood up to the tremend- ous strain.
