The desirabilty of preparing a seheme for the development of the south bank of the Thames from the present County Hall as far as London Bridge, by build-. ing an embankment, shops, etc., has been under consideration by the Improvements Committee of the London County Council..
The Committee in their report, state:
The river frontage in ques tion is at present occupied by pri- vate and public wharves, depots, and other trade premises, many of considerable magnitude. An embankment scheme would in- volve the dialocation of river and land transport and the extinction of, or interference with, trade, and claims in respect of this, to gether with the heavy cost of ac quiring property, would amount to a large sum. The work which would be entailed to obtain even a rough estimate of the cost of em- bankment, would be very heavy."
