The meeting was called to adjourn the annual general meeting until the motton brought by members of the Society against the Chairman and the Vice-Chairman has been heard in the High Court,

As soon as the Chairman, Lord Banbury, and several members of the Council appeared on the plat- form, it became apparent that those present were strongly opposed to any such adjournment.

The Ilon. Stephen Coleridge, standing below the platform, said Joudly: "I propose that Sir Robert Gower take the chair." The motion was seconded, and a number of members shouted, "Carried."

"

When Sir Robert Gower went on to the platform to speak, there waa uproar and shouts of "Sit down," "We want Sir Robert Gower." It Was nat for Bonio little time that Mr. Coleridge was able to make himself heard again.

A crous-summons against Police Constable Phillips was withdrawn. Philips said he saw Dove take the Alsatian by the throat and thash it with a whip, lie then placed his hands on Dove's shoul- ders to prevent further chastise- ment of the dog.

Dove's defence was that the dog entered a shop and had to be cor- rected.

Ile was drawn from the shelter of his home by a ring at his front door, and as he stepped outside In answer to the summons a motor. car drove slowly by.

From the window protruded the ugly muzzle of a machine gun, and before Murphy could withdraw be was lying dead on his own lawn with a bullet in his heart.

His wife returned from a church Barvice soon after he had been carrled into his house and cried: I don't know why they killed him. I knew he had enemies, but I did not think any of them would kill that big, kind-hearted man."

But his police record is not so pleasing. Murphy was the ring leader in Chicago's most daring mail robbery In 1922. At Dear- born-street Station rabbera in broad daylight carried off £25,000.
