American Express Travelers Cheques

Definition of TRAVELLERS' CHEQUES——

"The system of Travellers Cheques was originated in 1891 by the American Express Company with the object of creating a form of travel currency which would give the holder the security of a letter of credit and at the same time the convenience of local currency. The Company registered the cheques under the trade name of of 'AMERICAN EXPRESS TRAVELERS' CHEQUES' the word Travellers being apolled with one 1. This advantage of the Cheques was so apparent that other banking institutions adopted the system."

The Inquiry had been adjourned from Tuesday last week.

Captain Morgan was recalled and questioned. by the Pre- sident, repented his statement that the draft of his ship was 9 feet 5 inches forward and 10 feet 3 inches aft. Owing to the structure of the ship, the figures aft could only be The ship approximately gauged. was trimmed by the stern, witness himself taking the draft before leaving.

President:-Do you realise that with a draft of more than 9 feet 2 inches the ship must have been overloaded?

Captain Morgan:-Yes, but I did not know at the time that she was drawing more.

Question of Specil,

to

Further questions relative speed elicited the fact that the Kochow's full speed was about 10% knots and 7% knots when at half speed.

Fresident: Do you consider it a wise proceeding to go at 7% knots with a current of 5% knots?

Captain Morgan explained the usual procedure of waiting for tide in the vicinity of the Ear and admitted that the touching, in view of the structure of the ship was always fraught with danger. In any case he never interfered with the pilot.

Capt. Scott-Have you ever struck this bar before?

Capt Morgang-Yes. and I can only suggest that the extremely strong current caused her to heel over. She had never done so on previous occasions.

Lieut. Commdr. King:-Did you anticipate an extra strong current at this time of the year?

Capt. Morgan: Yes, and I warned the pilot to exercise care. Mr. George Swan. asat. Govmt. Marine Surveyor, examined by the President, atated that he con- ducted inclining tests of the s.. Kochow on September 30, 1924 and the results were such as to sug- gest that an additional 37% tons of ballast should be put in making a total of 50 tons. This alteration was due to additional structure of two cabins and conformation with Piracy Regulations.

The allowed draft under the measurements was 9 feet 2 inches with full cargo on board,

Substantially Correct.

The President recapitulated the previous evidence with regard to passengers and cargo carried on the night in question and witness

:

President: Could you give any idea as to the angle of heel beforh water would enter the ship.

Mr. Swann: Taking the maя- ter's draft as correct, water would enter at 10 degrees.

President:And her stability. would tend to decrease?

Mr Swann:-Yes.

Further questions and answers relative to water entering by the ash-chute and hatches could not be

heard.

President: Would there have been room for all the cargo carried if it had been stowed in the lower hold?

Mr. Swan:-So far as I can ascertain from her measured capa- city, there would have been room. President: Do you consider the Kochow a suitable ship to carry both cargo and passengers assum- ing the cargo was properly stow

ed?

Mr. Swann:-Quite. The Court then adjourned consider its finding.
