PIGS' LUGGAGE?
AMUSING MARINE COURT
OBSERVATIONS.
At the Marina Court this morn-` ing, before. Commdr, J. B. Newill,. D.S.O., R.N., Captain M. McCarthy, master of the ss. Kong Ning, was charged with working cargo on Sunday, Jund 10, without having obtained a permit. The defen. dant, who was represented by Mr. Wadoson, of “Messrs. «Deacons, ploaded not guilty.
Police Sergeant Elliot stated that be passed the 8.8. Kong Ning at about moon on June 10 and ́observed bundles of firewood belog. put into junks alongside the vessel. He went on the wharf and met Captain McCarthy. who asked him what he wanted. Witness replied that he was looking for the Chief Officer and further asked accused if he had a Sunday cargo per- mit. Captain McCarthy replied that he was not working cargo. but referred witness to the compradore. Witness then board- ed and saw the compradore, who stopped the dischargo of wood and made one junk return the bundles to the Kong Ning. He asked the compradoro if he denied, working cargo, and the compradore replied that he did not
Saw Pigs on Roard.
Cross-examined by Mr. Wadeson, Sergeant ElHot admitted know.. ledge of certain letters which were: handed up and subsequently pass- ed to the Marine Magistrate. He had seen four bundles of firewood removed to a junk, but on threo junks, there was a total of seven bundles. They were not the usual size of commerical bundles,
As to the Kong Ning, he saw - pigs on board, but no chickens. The vessel having arrived from Wachow he admitted the livesock would cortainly have required feeding on the voyage, and that it would be necessary to use some- thing to prepare the food.
Mr. Wadeson suggested that the firewood was so Laod and might be termed passenger's luggage.
Pigs Luggage.
Laughter was caused when, in reply to a question by his Worship, Mr. Wadeson suggested that if not luggage of the pig coolies,, then possibly it was pig's luggage!
„On the point of asking the com- pradore if he denied that cargo- was being worked, witness replied. that he had no specific reason for: asking the question, I only having occurred to him to ask it in the ordinary course of his duty.
This Mr. Wadeson described as an unfair question to have put, as policemen and Police Courts were: synonymous in the minds of most! Chinese. It was further ascer-- tained that after making the first: did not: investigation, witness again board the Kong Ning.
Wreck Survivors,
Cantain McCarthy, called, stated: that he arrived from Wuchow at 11.00 a.m. on June 10 and loft the ship within two minutes, to rsport. the sinking of the Kochow to the authorities and his "arrival to tho Harbour Ofco. The Kong Ning was carrying about 280 aurvivors from the wreck and. a heavy freight of pigs, chickens.. and general cargo."
Withdeg met the police sergeant' on the wharf and was informed of the alleged offence. He went on the Praya and, saw, on the offside. of the ship a junk with three bundles of firewood on board, which had obviously been put there from People always pay more atten- the Kong Ning. He informed the tion to the BRIDE than they do compradore that the police were to the GROOM, but in to-day's "after his blood" for working car letter wolf they're equally impor-go, but the compradore denied that

Dealers' Methods.
Captain McCarthy then described. the routine of pig and.. chicken. dealers who travelled down. They brought their, food for the livestock, and firewood for cooking it. If, on arrival at Hongkong, any food or wood was left, they, unloaded it with the livestock, as it was their own property and had nothing to do with the ship,
Questions put by the police officer prosecuting, with regard to the times of arrival and the committal of the offence, were ruled out es irrelevant to the case by His Wor ship.
His Worship, addressing the de- fence, pointed out that, according to the Ordinance, that which was. not personal Juggage, was cargo. Mr. Wadeson pleaded that it 1-The idea of letter golf is to was in this case personal luggage
