The fact that automobile builders, bring out new types of cars in rapid succession aggravates these because difficulties still further, after the lapse of some time makers are no longer able to supply spare parts for the older types, so that these must be manufactured specially. This is doubly annoying to the consumer, first because he cannot use his car for a more or less prolonged period, and second because he has to pay threo.times as much for the spare parts re quired than he would be charged otherwise."

400 Different Patterns,

Or take the manufacture of agricultural machinery for another illustration of the position. Is it necessary that there should be four hundred different kinds of cutters for mowing machines and innumer able types of teeth for threshing machines, not to mention the huge variety of other important acces sories of such machlies? What is the unlucky farmer to do when, att the height of the harvesting season, several of these parts become un- usable, whilst the nearest town where the required parts can be bought may possibly be situated at a distance of a thousand miles from his farm?

Those difficulties, these unneces sary expenses of money, and this waste of time will be done away with once the system of standardiz ing all the important parts of machines has been. 'universally carried through. It will then be | possible to obtain the few spare parts still required at any village store, and it will be a matter of in- difference whether the machine wAS made by Robinson & Co. whilst Brown and Smith are the manufac turers of the accessories, because every part will fit any machine whatever its origin.

German Measures, Having appreciated the advan- tages of standardization, we may well ask why it is that we are still confronted with all the difficulties referred to. The principle, how- ever, is being increasingly applied, and its application gains ground year after year.

In Germany, for instance, the work of designing standard types- has now been proceeding for about ten years. Those who attended a special exhibition that was held re- cently were able to obtain a graphic view of the progress already at- tained.

It is but natural that the German engineering industry, owing to its Important position, should have gone particularly far in standardiz-

ing its products. Most of its chief
