against Mr. Frederick Lavy, a holme, Charton-road, Shepperton,

damages for alleged maintenance Mr. Wiggins sought to recover and champerty.
The allegation was that Mr. Schneider and his wife to bring Ivy. pernunded Mr. Sidney an action against Mr. Wiggins for damages for personal injuries caused to the man's wife and child in a street accident, upon an. agreement that one-tenth of any compensation should be paid to the Legal Aid Society, an allega- tion which Mr. Lavy denied.
Mr. Comyns Carr, K.C., for Mr. Lavy, said Mr. Lavy had been practising as a solicitor for thirty- four years without complaint of any description against him."
Mr. Comyns Carr said that Mr. Wiggins could only prove his case by showing that the Legal Aid Society and Mr. Lavy were ono and the same thing, and in this he had failed. Mr. Lavy was not in the least ashamed of the way in which he had acted-It was the only way in which the poor could obtain justice.
Mr. Justice Brauson, aumming up, said a great deal had been said about this method being the only way poor people could get justice, Rules, however, had been made under which, if a person could satisfy an official of these Courts that he had a prima facie case, he could be helped by solici tors and counsel, who would act for nothing, in getting his case brought forward.
The jury, after an absence of more than an hour, returned a verdict in favour of Mr. Wiggins, and judgment, was entered for him, with costs, for £29 148. 2d, as the agreed total of taxed costs. A stay of execution was granted.
THE SLATER CASE.
PERMISSION TO CALL FRESH WITNESS.
London, June 9, The Scottish High Court has granted the preliminary appeal of Oscar Slater for permission to call a fresh witness at the hearing of the appeal on its merits, fixed for July 9, and also to recall Helen Lambie, but has refused a permit to the appellant, who did not give evidence at the original trial, to give evidence because euch would be merely a repetition of the plea of not guilty, and further refused to allow Sir Bernard Spilsbury to be a witness as he never saw Miss Gilchrist's body,—Router.
