SYNOPSIS.

The summer she is 16, SALLY FORD leaves the state orphanage to be "farmed out" to CLEM CAR- SON, a farmer. Sally knows no other home than the orphanage from the time she is four, when a woman leaves her there and dis- CATCH appears. Sher forgeta her when she meets DAVID NASH, handsome young student of scienti fic farming who is working on the Carson farm for the summer. David is genuinely fond of Sally, arousing the anger of both PEARL, Clem's daughter, and of Clem him self, who hopes David and Pearl will marry.

David begs the little orphan to confide in him if life on the farm becomes unbearable and Assures her he is her friend. She Foca with him for a walk in the field by moonlight and confides in m that she fears Carson will soon take her back to the Home be- cause of Pearl's hatred for her.

The next day Sally is left alone at the farm with Clem.
