SHOE
POLISH TURNS MEN
BLUE.
Numerous enser havo been re- ported of persons suddenly turn- inse blue and fainting away after wearing a pair of tan shoes that have been recently dyed. The result is due to poisoning by the aniline dye or nitrobenzene that exists in the shoe dye or shoe polish.
Cases are also reported of in- fants that have been poisoned by marking inks used to mark cloth- ing, when these inks contained nitrobenzene..
In the Cook County, Hospital In Chiengo some years ago there were eight eases of men who had turned, a brilliant purple follow- ing the drinking of shoe polish, in the absence of more digestible and sub- perhaps more stimulating stated.
New York Twins,
The most recent instance con- cerns twin babies In New York City who suddenly turned blue in the babler September. When
were examined after two daya they appeared ashy grey in colour, the finger and toe nails lead col oured, the lips and the tongue dark bluc.
A careful examination falled to reveal any weakness of the heart to account for blueness or any dif ficulty with the breathing or piration that would explain the condition.

The babies were nursing and the mother had not taken strong drug which might have ap peared in the milk and thus poi- soned the babies. The mother did not know that any shoe dye had any been used in the home or marking ink.
However, she was asked if any strong smelling stuff had been used around the habies before they turned blue. It was then dis-
father the
had covered that brought home some disinfectant which he poured on the edges of a mattress in the hope of killing bed bugs,
The odour was strong and gave the mother a headache, but never- theless she put the babies to sleep on this mattress, where they lay for eleven hours. Fortunately the window was wide open at the foot of the bed so that they turned blue but did. not die.
Poison Harms Blood.
The blueness is due to the fact that the poison injures the blood and prevents it from carrying the oxygen that is necessary and which is responsible for the red- ness of the bloud.
The product used for killing the bed bugs, was in this instance A deodorant substance called creco, which is not sold as an in- secticide or insect killer, but only as a deodorant.

LETTER GOLF.
"A great many times nowadays a HIKE ends up as a TOUR and that is exactly what to-day's puzzle does.
HIKE
TOUR
1-The idea of letter golf is to change one word to another and do it in par, a given number of strokes. Thus to change COW TO HEN, in three strokes, COW, HOW, HEN, HEN.
2-You can change only one lotter at a time.
3-You must have a com- plota word, of common usage, for each jump. Slang words

PLANE SHORT OF PETROL.
CAUSE OF CRASH ON LONDON
CANNES SERVICE.
The London office of the Air, Union has received a report from its Paris ofice on the forced land- ing of their first London-Cannes aeroplane recently.
According to this report, the en- gire failure was due to lack of petrol. The tanks were empty when the aeroplane came down. The Air Union explain that the Bristol engine in the wrecked ma- chlie was one which they had on! contract installation, and fitters of the company supplying it were in charge at Le Bourget
They state that the tanks were filled before the aeroplane left Le Berget with sufficient petrol to carry on for five hours, but that! owing to incorrect adjustment of the carburettors there was enormous consumption of fuel, this causing the tanks to run dry after three hours flying.
an
An interesting point is that the report on the wrecked machine was sent to England on another Air Union machine, which was also compelled to make a forced landing at Lympne on Tuesday.
