SIXTY MEN IN TRIAL

THE POCKET MAGIC OF AN

INDIAN PLANTER.

"An Ethnologlat,” who writes in the very interesting March num- ber of the Empire Review on "Where Trial by Ordeal Still Flourishes," says that wherever they deem themselves out of reach of the white District Commission- er's penetrating eye the West African blacks of the Comeroons, South Nigeria, and up-country from Calabar stage dramatic trials by poison with the use of noxidus beans of physostigma venenosum which contain a powerful polson affecting the nervous and mus- cular system].

The prisoner, if innocent, eats and is sick nt once; if guilty, ho is not sick and soon dies,

The writer says they have a [safer and more effective way of staging trials by ordeal in India. He tells the following story:

There had been a murder in the neighbouring village, and it was strongly suspected that one of a local English tenplanter's men had done it. The planter, went down to see the new Commissioner of Police and besought him not to hult in very energetically for a few days. "I've got my own no tion how to get to the bottom of this little mystery,

he said, "Not strictly constitutional, but wait and see.....*

Such was the shouted reply made at 3 am. by Mr. Way, of Gold- smith-road, Peckham, to his wife, who had declared, "I'm sure there's' someone in the kitchen."

There were no very serious sins on the soul of anyone but the mar derer himself.

Magician-and Gallows.

Then came the arrival of the magician, a Lall, well-dressed Hindu, with the piercing eyes of a |fanatic:

The hush of the afternoon heat was. broken by the noise of ham-p mering. The gallows was being erected; the planter look care that all hts: meir knew that.

The following morning, instead of being sent into the fielda, some sixty coolies were brought to the hillside behind the bungalow and told to squnt in four rows. Even two men who were sick were car- ried. thither on their beds. Then. the sahib himself tested the gal- lows, with a heavy sack of sand. A shudder ran through the coolies as the rope jerked, tant, with w heavy thud....

"This famous magician is now going to discover the murderer," announced the sahib, who pro- ceeded to give an account of his infallibility and mentioned that the great man had already, dis- covered scores of murderers. The magician then doled out to each coolio a large spoonful of course pounded rice flour. When the signal was givèn, every man put the flour into his mouth. Three minutes were given for it to be chewed into pulp and ejected on to the piece of banana-pulm leaf in his lap.

"The innocent will have no trou- ble in doing this, but the murderer will not be able to. He will fail, and on yonder gallows will be die!" explained the magician.

"Behold the Murderer,"

Two and a half minules of chew- ing and "only another minute!" called the sahib:

Then we noticed a poor wretch who was in obvious difficulties. His face was contorted, livid; and horror dilated his eyes so that they were the eyes of an animal in a trap.

"Behold the murderer?" he shouted.

The Police Commissioner and his clerk left their chairs and came forward, to ply the trembling coolie with insistant questions, In five minutes, he had made a clean breast of it and was being led away to the local lock-up. | (The gallows, of course, WAB 1 mere bluff, to add to the culprit's fears).

"Very simple, you see," explain- Fed the young planter, as we went indoora, after dispersing the ga- thering. "The guilty man gets. the wind up-and blue funk stops the flow of the saliva." A very nice little bit of pocket magle, that might usefully be added to the private stock-in-trade of some of our District Commissionera in West Africa, to show the indigon- ous bean merchants that we know atrick worth two-and-a-half of theirs!
