The speech created tremendous excitement, and after preliminary discussion the conference ad journed to allow the Council to confer privately.
The Council conferred with Mr.) Creswell for three hours yester day evening, and this morning Mr. Creswell addressed a. letter to Mr. Jenkins, the Chairman of the party, wherein he assured the Connell that he had never intended to cast any reflection on the personal honour and integri- ty of members of the Council; in fact, he could not find anything in his speech which could be so interpreted.
In view of the letter, the Council asked Mr. Jenkins to announce that they had unanimously re- solved, in the Interests of party; unity, that they desired the inci- dent to be closed.
Mr. Creswell persisted in his refusal again to being nominated for the National Council, so he has cut himself completely adrift, as Parliamentary Lender from the party organisation. Many dele- rates declare that a serious crisis Is only temporarily averted.
Colonel Creswell, the Leader of the South African Labour Party, has of late been the subject of n variety of rumours. In mid- December five prominent members of the party-all "Creswellians'--- were suspended, and rumours followed that their Chief would! before long relinquish his lender- ship. His support of the Flag Bill was even more, violent than that of General Hertzog himself but he finally brought himself to speak of the Fing question as being "now happily surmounted." Colonel Creswell has always, in public at least, discountenanced the rumours of a Labour-Nation- alist split.
