Tribute to the Staff. In conclusion, I would

once again like to pay a tribute to the work of the members of the staff, both Chinese and British. It is a great pleasure to report that four of our past students are teaching La the school. There has been a good deal of sickness among the stuff this last term, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Pim, kindly lent to us by the Kwangsi-Hunan Mission, and Mrs. Ware for so splendidly coming to our rescue at very short notice.

At a time such as this when troubles surround us, and many schools in China have had, to close down, it is a matter for great thankfulness that we have been able to carry on our work in peace and quietness, and strong in the belief that God has called us to this work we can look forward with calmness to the year ahead of us, and in the words of our School motto "In faith, go for ward:"

"In Faith Go Forward." *

His Lordship the Bishop, ad- dressing the company said:

I would like to take up those words with which Miss Atkins concluded: the words of your school motto "In faith go for "ward." I have been away from this place. nine months and the prevailing impression, in my mind as I réturn is that in spite of dif ficulties-in spite of grave' diff-

culties substantial progress is

being made.

I felt this before I read your school report, when I realised that while I have been away a new Chinese Church has been built at 1 "Kowloon, a substantial Church Hall has been erected in Canton and St. Paul's Girls' College has been completed and is in occupa-

tion.

And now having listened to your school report I feel the same thing. As Chairman of your Col- lege Council I know you have real difficulties--not a few this past year: Miss Middleton-Smith has had to go home and since then no less than three members of the staff have been in hospital. But in spite of these and other dif- ficulties there has been progress 13 your examination results testify, as the building projects you have in hand' testify, as the developments you have before you for improving your scientific equip ment testify and as, what to me is hardly less important than ex- amination results, the growing spirit of social service among you testifies. I class the cultivation of social service very high in any school curriculum. And if to-day I cast eyes back over the seven years I have known this school there has been progress amid dif- ficulties all along the line-~~amaz- ing progress.

"In faith go forward". that is the challenge that rings in our ears to-day.
