Foreign Property Affected" Another problem is the fact that new plans include the making of roads through foreign-owned pro perty, and extension plans which involve the demolition of consider- able sections of foreign buildings. Coming Shortly

A Fine City.

. Chaochowfu presents a big con- trast to Swatow. It is a finely built Chinese elty, with some 200,- 1000 inhabitants, and new roads have there followed the lines of the thoroughfare of the old city. The streets are straight, ex- cup for sich turns as were neces- anry to ward off the course of in- imigal spirits, and the widening has preceeded on uniform plans, the sidewalks being wilt with pillared arcades; this Both gives the shops whose second storey can thus extend over the walks, more. room, and provides some shade in the hot weather.

The road surface is wearing het- ter in Chaochowfu, too. so that the city presents a finished apearance.

It is antisfactory that the altera tiony have taken surprisingly little away from its essentially Chinese appearance, and this is further sccord by the retention of most of the magnificent uraties in the main street. The widening of the street has thrown these into more prominent relief, and the street presents a handsome ap- pearance. The fine old wall of the rity has been demolished between the north, west and south gates, büt on the east, where it forms a harrier against the Han River, it is retained...

Eventually doubtless Swatow will begin to present some appear- ance of order, but meanwhile the quiet old-world city has the ad- vantage. Our Own Correspondent,
