THE HONGKONG® TELEGRAPH,
OLD BRANDY SWINDLE.
BOTTLES SMEARED AND SOOTED.
In a letter to The Daily Mail Mr. Charles E. Stambois drawa attention to what he describes as the vintage brandy "ramp" in cer-- talu dance clubs, restaurants and hotels throughout the country.
He declares that to expose the way in which brandy five or si years old is sold as 1865 or som other old vintage, in carefully soot ed bottles with impressive labels, would be to do a real service to genuine shippers of nuthentic Cog naes. and to the firms, who not only distil the spirit but own vine- yards in the Cognac district of Charante.
"The towns of Cognac and Jarnue," writes Mr. Stambois, "have hundreds of agents who re gister their names at the post offices as Cognne merchants and shippers, but the only business that they do is to caleb British buyers of brandy as soon as they
trie in the district."
99 Per Cent. Faked.
Mr. Stambols Loki a Daily Mail reporter that nearly 99 per cent. of the so-called vintage brandy that is sold front bottles in re- staurants, hotel and dance clubs i England is faked. It gon- tinued:
In some cases vintage brandy is mixed with cheap stuff, but mosk- ly the glasses-for which, 48, or is. 6d. is charged-contain brandy pol more than 10 years old at the most.
Bordenax is the real headquar ters of the vintage brandy ramo. There are people there making fortunes out a labels. Often people in this count pay £2 10%.. for a bottle of brandy, that is worth only 10s. They pay 10s. for the brandy and £2 for the bottle...
The labels on these bottles bear high-sounding names like Fin Napoleon-whatever that may mean and any old date is printed on them. The bottles themselves are carefully, smeared with size and then covered with dirt to give them an appearance of great due.
Tak at the Label.
There are 25 firms selling genuine vintage brandies and something likes 8,000 fakers, hi- eluding the agents who assist the latter.
The way to know a genuine bottle of vintage brandy is to look. for the labels of the growers and the battles, and if brandy is drunk in a hotel or a restaurant the customer should insist on seeing the bottle opened.
