Miami, Fla., Nov. 2nd. As for back as 1686 the first section of what is considered the most important hightway in the United States was laid. Today, this route extends over a distance of; almost 2,500 miles from Fort Kent, i at the most northerly point of Maine to Key West, the most Southerly point of Flordia.
It is America's highway reach- ing from tip to tip and hordering the Atlantic coast line. As such it is said to be of great strategic value as a military route.
But of more immediate interest | is the highway's history and its linkage of the original 13 colonies in a great chain of American lore... It passes through the great New England of earlier days, past battlefields of Revolutionary and Civil War day's and down through the romantic lands of the south..
Old Stage Route.
In 1802 stage coaches took practically this route from Boston to Savannah at a speed of 5 iniles a day. Today motorists by the thousand are driving down from various points along the route to the winter resorts of Florida, aud are doing it five times as fast.

PACKARD IN GOOD POSITION,
Rumours of Merger Denied.
Frequent recurrence of rumours that the Packard Motor Car Co. is about to enter into some sort. of a merger is eloquent testimony to the independent and prosperous status of that concern. Otherwise it may mean very little. The fact is that this Company is not only self-sufficient but that it gives good. promise of continuing to grow more independent, and even more prosperous as time runs on, as it is in a splendid tactical position.
"Packard prestige" has 'always been a phrase to conjure with and nothing has ever been permitted to dim the lustre of the name. Continued pioneer work in aero and marine engineering," and the undiminished vogue of the straight eight, as n style leador have kept the concern in the forefront of the industry. In addition, the fact. that the shorter wheelbase six has. successfully enteroi tue molerate price class has placed Packard- products within the reach of a very mach wider market.
The popularizing of the six cartier this year had the effect of increasing the 1927 sales very con- siderably, and beanse the Comm- pany is in a position to manufacture This model very economically, it brenght in a handsome increase in
Venue. Thus, the earnings pesi- tion is excellent and as Packard is financially indessendent, stock- hunders are cinnting on a good year.
Packard actually turned a pretty sharp corner back in 1920, when it Warn into production with its "single six," and prepared to side- track the twin six which had been its sole means. of support for five years. The twelve-cylinder car was continued until 1922, but in the meantime the more moderate priced six was rapidly gaining ground and had put the Company back into its accustomed place in the ranks of the industry, a posi tion which it has not yielded up in the last five years, despite the in- fluence of strong competition. A year later the straight eight was brought out, so that six-and eight- cylinder models are now in their fourth year of production.
A second corner was turned in 1925 when the annual new-model policy Was definitely aban- duned and the Company set
out to establish and main- tain more even market. In the earlier days of the industry the Packard mid-Summer, un- nouncements were, always expect- ed to be of nation-wide interest and were seldom disappointing in that respect. The present policy is to introduce improvements from time to time without blare of tram- pets and without any particular publicity until a considerable num. ber of improved types have already shown their advantages in the hands of consumers. The plan has numerous merits, not the least of which is that it avoids the annual disruption of demand and abrupt depreciation in value of recent models.
The market position of the line is remarkable in that it has com- paratively few direct competitors. The price range, $2,250 to $5,100, with a gap of $865 between the two lines, involves a spread of $2,850, which is represented by 16 dif ferent models. One other concern has a spread of $4,105 with a list of 30 models and still another hus a spread of $4,745 with a list of 31 models. The comparison in a general way indicates the compara- tive simplicity of the Packard dis- tributing problem.
In direct competition with "the eight are but three other manu- than while not more facturers, three six-cylinder lines are direct- ly competitive with the six... More expensive models of some eight or nine lower priced lines are com- parable in price with the alx, it is true, but the situation is not things competitive, all strictly considered.
Packard buyers are principally of two distinct classes, both of One which are rapidly growing. class is of former owners of one or two leading lines in the brac- immediately under the kets Packard price class, and these lines are growing

The other class of prospects are repeat buyers, and as it is now the seventh year since the introduc- tion of the single six line the number of such buyers to "mature" under the law of averages is just beginning to become a definite quantity. Depending somewhat on this year's experience an increas- ing number of repeat sales will be budgeted against each year's sales quota from now on. As Packard owners have always been pretty good repeaters it follows that the outlook for sales from this source In succeeding years is pretty well, defined.
