THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH,

THE MORPHIA CASE,

CROSS-EXAMINATION OF CHRISTIE.

The hearing of the case against J. Christie and G. Bluhm was con- tinued at the Central Magistracy yesterday afternoon before Mr. X, E. Lindsell. The court sat until 5.45 p.m. in an attempt to bring the hearing to a close, but it was found necessary at that hour to adjourn.

Following on his own testimony that the subject of all the conver-. sations he had with Haynes and' the Chinese Pollée Reservist was about oil, and not morphia, Chris- tle was still being cross-examined by the Director of Criminal Intel- ligence when the case was resumed yesterday afternoon.

When you told Mr. Loask that you were acting on behalf of Bluhm in oil conversations or oil business, were you acting as partner in the Oll Company, or just because Bluhm could not do it himself? I was acting as part- ner for anything placed by myself. The oil propositions in Hongkong dated from the beginning of Octo- ber, but Bluhm was in communíca- tion. by letter in Swatow beföre that.

When did you begin to use the office at No. 480 Nathan Rond 7- Beginning of November, sometime. Could not you remember the exact date?--Sometime in the, be- ginning of November the 1st or 2nd November, I am not sure.

Did you have any sign or name- board at that address?-Nothing put up there in the meantime at all; no.

I think you will agree with me that the only sign was a Chinese sign? Yes.

Nothing to indicate the oil busi- ness at all?-No; for the simple. reason that the oil business" had got been established.

How did you manage to get the use of that office?I was intro- duced to Mr. Kay (Karim Din) on my return from lacne, through Bluhm. He was introduced to Mr. Bluhm by Mr. Khan Sahib Mali Khan.

Did you pay any reat?-No, we hat only got in there a few days.

Why couldn't you carry on that business temporarily either at Victoria Gardens or at Mali Khan's address of business?-At Mall Khan's coffee shop, soldiers were coming in and going out continu- ously, No. 5 Victoria Gardens was a residence where we were liv-) ing, and could not very well be used for business.

Did you have Mali Khan's per mission to use his address of "Khan Sahib-Absolutely, In fact I got money by means of a letter registered at this address, from his manager, Karim Chand: Has Karim Chand any share in the business?--That I don't know. Did you know Karim Chand in Shanghai or Swatow?-No.

You were in Macao about Octo- ber 21?—Yes.
