The inaugural address of the Edinburgh Philosophical In- stitution was delivered by Lord Burnham, C., LL.D., who spoke on "Newspapers" in the U.F. Assembly Hall.
Lord Burnham, whe was cordi- ally received, reminded the au- dience at the outset that the League of Nations had formally recognised the newspapers. Press as an essential and even indis-
pensable part of the machinery of civilisation and that, he said. marked a
great change in the attitude of mind of the Govern- ments of the world towards the Press in its relation to world affairs. In all the recent improve ments of their school system, a combined endeavour was being continuously made to bring it into due relation to life and the art of living, and the part played by the newspaper in the enlighten- ment of public opinion could not be overlooked or ignored.

It was a remarkable fact that in their national histories, even down to the end of the last century, and including those that had been written by professed journalists, the part that newspapers had played in the evolution of their national life had never had but the most cursory and ill-informed notice.

BEAUTY SPECIALIST LOSES: HER CASE.
WAS NOT POISONED.
The question of whether a beauty, specialist, was poisoned by eating a liver sausage sand- wich at an Appenrodt (Ltd.) restaurant at Piccadilly, London, on June 2, 1926, was dealt with special jury in the King's Bench by Mr. Justice Horridge and a Division, London, recently, when the hearing was concluded of the action for damages brought by Miss Helen Richards, Wellington Square, Chelsea, London.
The defence was that Miss Richards did not take a meal at the restaurant on June 2, and also that any food the plaintiff might have taken could not have caused food poisoning..
After hearing, avidence the jury returned a verdict in favour of the defendants, and judgment Was entered according, with costa,

He concluded she had been suffering from food poison- ing, and she was not sufficiently recovered to go back to work. He could not, however, attribute her condition to any particular article of food she had eaten.
