The quotations, which had been about $1.60 per Hongkong dollar, began to slide and dropped 10 cants the first day. By the after- noon of the 23rd, the "rate was $1.70. The exchange shops were crowded and evidently trying to do as little buying of Kwangsi paper as possible and yet not close their doors. The sight of a Hongkong note seemed to be a great event and easily got the attention of the manager, the main question being: "How much Hongkong do you want to dispose of?"

All day the launches were seen towing the rafts of logs down and placing them in position to block the river. Many were wondering if boats from Hongkong would be permitt- ed to come through, but official word was not available.
All boats are required to enter the port during daylight and are searched by military aathorities just below the Chinese Maritine Customs prai. The seach is very thorough and usually occupies over an hour.
