Shanghai Electricity Output: Mr. Vaughan has been in Shang- hai singe 1900-the year of the Boxer Rebellion--and has wit messed the rapid development of that city, which now, compares very favourably with any of the big cities in the world. Speaking of Shanghai he said:"
"It is remarkable the ideas and opinions many of the folks in the Homeland have of a place like Shanghai. There are not a few who really believe that we have to live in mud huts, and that'ance we reach China we say good-bye to civilisation. Quite the opposite is the case. Shanghal of to-day is a very modern city in many 're- apects," Take one item alone, that of electricity. Great Britain is much behind us.

The fact that the expiring leases were renewed at very much higher rentals during a period of un- precedented crisis in the Colony speaks sufficiently for the value of the site, which is situated 'right in the very heart of the banking area. The difficulty, or rather the draw. back, with us, however, was that our capital of $700,000 was much too small, being less than one quarter of the value of the pro- perty, hence the increasing rate of interest we have had to pay for our loans has prevented us from share- paying any dividend to holders up to date..
