CAPSIZING OF THE PAHANG
FERRY.
A distressing disaster occurred on the Jelei River in Pahang on Saturday evening, October 22, re- ports the Malay Mail.
It had been ruining heavily earlier in the day in the hilla above Selborne-Plantations---t- Padang Tungku, Kuala Lipe, causing the river to rise rapidly. At 3 o'clock a ferry which plies across the river near Selberag ostate was crossing, it is said, with 28 passengers, mostly estate- workers, and all Malays, about half the number being women, when it capsized almost in mid- stream and threw all aboard into the water.
Six Women Drowned,
Most of the passengers were able to save themselves by cling ing to the overturnéd boat or swimming ashore, but unfortu- nately six Malay women were drowned.
Three of the bodies were "re- covered by the Malays of Selbourne estule-two near the place where the boat capsized and the other about three miles further down the river. A search is still being made for the bodies of the other three women.
We understand, says the journal, that the ferry boat-a prau-usually carries no more than about fifteen persons.

The above is a characteristic portrait of Mr. Edward P. Eagan, the amateur heavyweight boxer, who it is an- nounced, has married the daughter of the millionaire soap manufacturer, Mr. Sydney Colgate, a New York report stating that the father has philosophically accepted that situation. Miss Margaret Colgate cloped with Mr. Eagan early last month. The news is of particular interest out here, as Mr. Eagan was on a visit to Hongkong in December, in the course of a world tour, and boxed Stoker Addison, on December 28, at the H.K.B.A. bcuts arranged for that night, Addison retir ing in the fourth round. Eagan won the amateur heavy- weight title in England while there as a Rhodes scholar.
