Again, in a notebook found with her documents, "286 grains" was entioned. The grains could be resumed to be grains of rice. At e same time, "black rice" was a ell-known lang-word in the rade" for opium. The deduction erefore, was that grains meant

Letters from Manila.

Mr. Loseby said there had been litigation in the Summary Court in which all the parties were involved on a question of partnership. It an. peared that the alleged assault ne- curred when Li Kam-tai attempt- ed to remove a chicken crate from Fung Kwan's stall. No one was seriously injured, only minor bruises being sustained.

CLOSE GAME.

Navy and Army teams were in op- position on the Hongkong Cricket Club ground yesterday afternoon, a very interesting and close match res sulting in a win for the Army by

The Navy took first knock and started badly. Llout. Dale was the only player who batted with any con- fidence against Melsome and Dobbie. Of the total of 115, he made no less than 64, scoring with great freedom wicket. Two balls he hit wat of the ground, one from Mel. Murvay parade some landing ground. He received little suppart from the other members of the team, with the exception of, Pay Lt.-Comdr. Shaw, who, going in late, was not out with 15 to his credit. None of the others reached double figures.

Melsome and Dobbie were principal- responsible for the collapse, the ner taking five wickets for 44 and ebbie three for 22.

The Army had to struggle hard for victory. Wickets fell cheaply early on, but Dobbie, Erskine, Bridgland and Thurp pulled the game round and when the innings was brought to a slese, there were 185 on the board.

The Navy went in a second time and scored 100 for the loss of one wicket. Scores:

When quarrels occurred between stall-hollers it "was desirable, if possible, to prevent further trouble, and he suggested that all the parties be band over, irrespective of what' took place on that occasion.

Mr. Hall said he appreciated Mr. Loseby's remarks, but he had been unable to convince his client that it would be best for all parties to be bound over. She did not appreciate what it meant, and was afraid that she would be assaulted again. Eng. Cont. Spalding, b Freshwater added, "What I think these people t.
