OCTOBER 17, 1927.

THE REFORM OF THE CALENDAR.

A TASK FOR THE YEAR 1928.

.

Friedrich Wilhelm, Prince Ysen- burg and Budingen, writes to the continental press:

The Gregorian calendar is, in several ways, ill-suited to the re- quirements of the present day. For one thing, instead of being exactly divisible into weeks of 'seven days, it counts "dot and carry one." Another fault is the shortness of the month of Febru-

h. ay. And, lastly, the variability of its Easter is extremely awk- ward and, unpractical.

The chief cause of these difficul- ties is the fact that the ordinary year consists of 365 days. If it contained 364, the whole matter could be simplified. The year would then have exactly 52 weeks: the quarter would contain 18 weeks; and the months might be so arranged that the first of each) quarter comprised 31 days and the other two 30 days each.

There remains the alrendy existing intercalary day of our present leap year. This must to be a serial day of the week, as otherwise our whole now arrange- ment would be thrown into dis- order. The most convenient way would be to add the day to No-1 vember, so that the calendars in leap-year would appear thus:

Really Necessary. Blochmann's calendarical re form has been taken up by as- "sociation formed by persona of various religious .confessions. It is noteworthy that Cardinal Ehrle of the Vatican has referred to this reform as possessing "the Manila great advantage of altering only what is really necessary." Above all, industrial circles ad- vocate It; indeed, a large number of chambers of commerce and industry. both in Germany and abroad, have expressed themselves" thercon favourably.

In any case, the introduction of a reform such, ns that "sketched Above is only a matter of time. It is not likely to be postnoped long, now that the League of Na- tions has taken up the question. The League has appointed a apecial committee to consider the various suggestions. These: emanate from 33 diferent coun |tries and total no fewer than 185. It may, however, be said already that, in all likelihood, the com- mittee will recommend the pro posals of Dr. Blochmann, the main features of which closely resemble these of my own scheme.
