Shortly after 8 a.m. workers in other parts of the factory heard a terrific report and saw buge tongues of flame shoot 100 ft. in the air, accompanied by dense smoke.

London, Sept. 11. Some fluctuations in the tastes of the public will be shown at the forthcoming dog show. For the sake of convenience, residents in towna are falling back upon ter- riers or one of the so-called toy breeds, of which the Pekinese is still the favourite, followed by the Pomeranian. Should the TROVO- ment for breeding Pomeranians, of a more useful size succeed,' there should be un increased de- mand for these vivacious and in- telligent pets. Recently the ten-. Three men--T. Prince, of Stoborough, S. Brown, and W. Davis, both of Upper Parkstone who were working at the far end of the building destroyed, had amaz- ing escapes. When the explosion accurred they had their backs to- wards the acetone stove, and were blown clean out of the building. Al though badly shaken they

were uninjured.

No information could be obtain- ed last night regarding the cause of the accident. Acelone is very arrely used in the manufacture of .cordite.

Helton Heath factory, built dur- ing the war, covers a large area bordering the upper reaches of Poole. Harbour. It is about seven miles from Poole and four miles from Warcham. The buildings in which explosives are handled are constructed in such a way as to prevent an accident in one spread- ing to another. They are some distance apart, and are protected by mounds of earth on every side. The accident is the worst which has happened at Holton Heath since the establishment of the factory during the war in 1915. One man was killed in an explosion in the following year. There are 1,200 hands employed at the works, in- cluding a number of women.

A PASTOR-PEDLAR.

MINISTER SELLS SOCKS AND SILK STOCKINGS.

To prove his own statement that an honest living could be made out of peddling, the Rev. Waiter Foxen, minister at Holdenhurst Road Wesleyan Church, Bournemouth, himself took out a pedlar's licence. As part of his "holiday" he went from door to door in the Midlands selling socks and silk stockings.

One person who purchased part of his wares was the wife of another minister.

I found it was no use trying to sell anything at the door to a man, or to a young wife whose husband

The other becomes so attached to master or mistress that he is miserable in their, ab- sence, sometimes even refusing his food from other hands. These traits are lovable, but they make exacting demands. It may be that this exclusiveness has given rise to the misconception that as a breed they are untrust- worthy. They are no more than any other.

The "Aberdeen." Those who consider fox-terriers to be too excitable and Airedales ton big, and yet want a terrier, are falling back upon an old and trusty friend, the Scottish terrier, miscalled Aberdeen." Aberdeen has no more claim upon them than other parts of Scotland. Quiet, almost dour in their man- ner, they have an individuality of charneter that makes them in- teresting. Not so long ago they were in danger of being sub- merged by Cairns, West Highland white terriers, and Sealyhams, but latterly their intrinsic merita have brought them back awain, among amateurs and on the show bench, and they have been smar- tened up in appearance as well.

Cocker spaniels, too, are ap- pearing in the London parks in some strength; though, with their long coats and short legs, they are less suitable for town house

in the bad weather. In disposi tion they have not changed since Chaucer and Shakespeare wrole of their universal friendliness.

Within an hour he had sold the bulk of his stock and had made a profit of £1.

This convinced him that he could make a living of £5 to £6 a week by peddling.

If they don't buy silk stockings for themselves, the probably buy them for their daughters, and rocks for their husbands.
