A BACTERIAL CAUSE.
A roport of the British Minis-. try of Health just made available points out that disease of the heart caused more doathe last year than did either cancer or tuberculosis, and that some forty: per cent,, of deaths from heart disease are ascribed to previous infection with rheumatism.
The bacteriologists who have been investigating this disease are convinced that it is caused by a form of streptococele bacterial or- ganiam of the same general na- ture as that which causes "scarlet fever and erysipelas. The fact has not, however, been proved completely.
