SENTENCE.

The Shaukiwan Murder Trial came to an end this morning, scon after 12 o'clock, when both prisoners were found guilty of the murder of Mrs. Mackay and sentenced to death.

There was a large attendance of foreigners in the Supreme Court when it re-assembled this morning, among those present being a number of ladies...

The acting Chief Justice, Mr.J. R. Wood, delivered his summing up to the Jury, speaking for just under one hour. In reviewing the evidence he laid stress on the importance of the half $1 forged note which was found on one of the accused, saying that this was the most outstanding link in the chain of circumstantial evidence."

The jury was away for half an hour considering their verdict, which was unanimously one of "guilty." The accused men, who remained stolid throughout, were then sentenced to death by his Lordship in the usual manner.

The agreement which has been BRITISH FORCES reached at the cotton conference at Manchester, as reported yes- terday, provides that the curbali- ment of production throughout the American section should be dealt with sectionally, and not by the method of treating all alike, re- gardless of the amount of work they have in hand and the state: of their stocks.

A system of basic prices will be adopted, whereby prices will be fixed according to the price of the current month futures, plus points 9 and something for costs

SWATOW'S PLIGHT OBSCURE

Although it has been known for some days that there had been a definite split between the Hankow and Nanking parties, it is learned to-day for the first time that an armed clash between the armies of these rival parties is expected to take place shortly in the region of Wuhu. "Military preparations are taking place on both sides towards this end.

A late telegram received this morning from Canton clears up the hitherto obscure position regarding the relationships between General Li Chai-sum and Cheung Fat-hui. The latter will become the Commissioner of Military Affairs in Kwangtung and is expected"" to issue à manifesto in a few days reaffirming his loyalty to General Li.

A severe "pruning" of the British forces in China is promised, according to a telegram from London, in order to avoid any further taxation. The Treasury is now engaged in ascertaining the cost of the Shanghai Defence Force in this connexion. LF The Swatow situation remains very obscure.
