S.J. Isaacs runs very close indeed to Mansel-Smith and ranks very high indeed in my opinion as a bowler. He has made an excellent name for himself at Hongkong and should up- hold this when they meet in Novém ber. As a batsman, "Sam" has been seen to advantage at times and is! quite dependable.

"THOSE DULL OLD DAYS."

MR. WILLIAM FÁRREN'S MEMORIES,

SORDID GAIETY.

"There was more horror than humour in those 'good old days,' and Lord Lambourne or anybody else who talks of the fun and frelic of the Victorian Bohemian la talking rubbish. It was all so deadly dull.".

In those words Mr. William Farren, the veteran actor, who is 74 and was 50 years on the stage, summed up his experiences of the West End man-ubout-town of Lord Lambourne's early days, to a Lon- don interviewer last month. Mr. Mr. Farren belongs to a family of Boheminna. His father, grand- father, great-grandfather. and himself had between them a stage: record of 200 years. "As a young man I saw much of the night life' that passed for fun and of which Lord Lambourne has been talking with such relish. I remember all those old haunts and I do not want them back. It may be that, being of Trish extraction on my fathers' side, there is a streak of the morbid in my character, but I found them so horribly, dreadfully dull.

Vulgar Amusement.

"There was the old Holborn Casino, which is now the Holborn Music Hall, and the Judge and Jury in Leicester-square, presided over by Judge'. Nicholson, a fa- vourite haunt of the young bloods in those days. Both these places were considered part of the smart life, but they were dull. The entertainment at the Judge and Jury, which took the form of mock trials, was merely an occasion for obscenity, blasphemy, and vulgarity.

"Another haunt of our Bohemian youth was Evans's, which is now. the National Sporting Club.. When I first went there it was ex- clusively the haunt of men, where you could have supper of steak and enions at any hour of the night.

Then women were admitted and occupied little enged parti- tions. It was a place to cat, drink, and be merry, but the merri ment was of a low order and the women were not the sort we would' have introduced to our mothers or our sisters.

Then we had the old Argyle. Rooms, where the Trocadero Ra staurant now stands. It was in those days a dance hall, and was next door to a church.
