This at present is quite impossible for the staffs of the hospitals.
Some Difficulties.
"It is at present useless even to suggest operation, for even 'the worst cases of unhealthy tonsils or adenoids. I think only two cases have been operated on, among Chinese children, during the year. When I have the School Nurse to interpret for me, I hope to be able to persuade the children into better health habits.
"Two outsanding difficulties are, that most children are seen at an age when defects have become so firmly established (chronic trac- horga, shortsight, ear disease, spinal curvature and poor chest. development) that no preventive measures are of much use; also the child's opinion as to necessity for treatment is allowed to be paramount. Lowering of the age for admission to schools would help in this difficulty.
"Another is that many boys at- tend school for a short time only and by the time re-inspection is made, (usually within six months after inspection) they have left school or transferred to another, in some cases under a new name. It is a distinct financial loss to the Government when a child is pro- vided with the specialist's eye ex- amination and spectacles, and leaves school the following week- or month.".

MURDER ENQUIRY.
TO-DAY'S HEARING. The trial of the two Chinese who are charged with the murder was con- of Mrs. Rose Mackay tinued before Mr. R. E. Lindsell this morning,
Mr. D. H. Davidson was the first witness called. He said he was a lodger staying with the Mackays. He remembered during the Chin- ese New Year seeing Mrs. Mackay in possession of two $1 notes of the Hongkong Bank, which he later discovered were forgeries.
Asked by Mr. Whyte-Smith, as re- gards the money he gave to Mrs. Mackay for his board at the end of July witness said that he gave her. $56 in. five $10 notes, one $5 and one $1.
оп
Witness also said that August 5, Mrs. Mackay had been to town to do some shopping at the Wing On Company. Witness could say from his personal know- ledge that deceased was a custom- er of Wing On's.
On August 7, at about 8 m. Walter Eckert rushed into the house and told him, in the pre- sence of Mr. Mackay, Miss K. Mackay and a Mr. Ware, that Mrs. Mackay was stalbed on the Chai- wan Road, Witness and Walter Eckert proceeded by tram and then by foot to Mrs. Mackay's assis- tance, whilst Mr. Mackay and the others went by motor car. A Mr. Osborne who lived next door noti- fed the police at Shaukiwan...He had to call at the police station as the telephone was out of order.
Witness and Walter Eckert were the first to reach Mrs. Mackay, the husband and the police arriving later. Mr. Davidson found her dead, propped up on the bank of the hillside and he laid her down on the road to await the arrival of the others.
Mr. Charles Mackay was next. enlled. He corroborated the evidence given by Mr. Davidson. He also told the court that he gave his wife $225 for housekeeping expenses and said that after the murder there was only $50 found. The rest of the money was compos- ed of one $100 note and several fives and tena which were missing. Mrs. Witness deposed that Mackay always wore three 'rings at all times. On her left hand was a diamond engagement ring, which since her murder had been missing.
The case is continuing.
