Mr. L. D. Turner, for the defence, in criticising what he described as an official "trap," disclaimed the responsibility of the proprietor for the offence, as all reasonable pre- cautions had been taken.

Inspector Shaftain pointed out that under the' Ordinance the man- agement of the hotel were accoun- table for the acts of their servanta. His Worship stated that the only point left for him to consider was the gravity of the offence and the fixing of the penalty accordingly. He had to consider if this was a solitary offence which might easily escape the attention of the manage ment, or whether it was one of many similiar offences, amounting to the system alleged by the pro- secution. He proposed to adjourn the case for consideration of the. point.
