Several sampans were washed ashore by the high seas and not a few were damaged. Fortunately no dives were lost.

In Kam Wah Street, Shaukiwan, a new row of houses, standing near the house where two men were arrested in connexion with the murder of the late Mrs. Mackay, was affected. Apparently the back doors to the flats were not locked and the wind enter- ing the houses broke all the win dows, tearing some away from their hinges and carrying them into the street.

An Unusual Scene.

The Fung Kwong Rubber Com- pany, which is near the tram ter- minus, was badly damaged, the roof of the building being holed in many places.

On the whole the houses in Shaukiwan fared badly although, so far as can be ascertained, no lives were lost. A Shaukiwan Story.

A policeman on duty at Shau- kiwan on Saturday night, was told by a frantic man who ran up to him, that a burglary had taken place. He accompanied the man, back to the house where the sup posed burglar had been.

It seems that the occupier had been away from the house during the blow and whilst absent, the wind played havoc with their furniture, tables and chairs. The man, on returning to his house, Jumped to the conclusion that it had been burgled and notified the police.

When in the presence of the policemen, made a rough examina- tion of his property, he was satis filed that nothing had been stolen and that he had only to thank the typhoon for his scare.

I do feel that he was in such a position that had the business of the firm been a flourishing one he could and would have claimed partnership.

I find that Tsang Ah-cheong was Partner and that she had au- thority to borrow money; that Cheng Cho was a partner when the money claimed, was advanced; that Cheng Sik-pui was not; and that Cheng Sik-pui had knowledge of the loan by the plaintiff and ac- quiesced in it. I therefore give judgment for the plaintiffs with costs.

'CHINESE WRITING.

If Japan, as one of her Professors predicts, exchanges Chinese charac- ters for Roman letters, will her. gain be greater than her loss?....

The question will no doubt be disputed between the artist and the utilitarian. Even the un- instructed West can see the beauty of Chinese writing, and would be sorry to lose those columna of exo- tic symbole, which add we know not what of significance and distinc tion to a Japanese print or a Chinese painting, says the London Morning Post. And there must be some thing delightful in a system of writing which appeals directly to the eye, and not merely through the eye to the ear. The Chinese caligraphist puts down his. ideas directly, without the intermediary of sound: his brush paints the thing or the idea, and not merely the
