It was not until the resumption of the hearing yesterday afternoon, that a Chinese detective said that the two words
"san kwoon" had a more significant meaning than that indicated in the previous literal interpretation. It meant, he said, new society" and was the name given to a Triad Society formed by Chiuchow coolies to take the place of the "old society," as established by local Cantonese before the strike.
He understood that when the first defendant used these words at the time of his arrest, he did witness was it not know that detective.
