Many people-afilleted with loss of hearing do not realize that they are gradually becoming deafened until they consult a specialist in diseases of the ear, nose and throat for some other disturbance, usually related, to a difficulty in breathing.

SATURDAY,

A FUTURE WORRY,

IF WOODPULF GIVES OUT.

The annual meeting of the So- ciety of Chemical Industry, beld last month at Edinburgh, was pro- ductive of a series of papers, which neted as signposts pointing not only the paths along which chemists and the chemical industry have come and will probably go, but the directions also in which explorn- tion by allied interests' would seem to be of immediate necessity.. The need, for instance, of filing fresh sources of raw materials for fibres, due to the rapidly increasing con- sumption and possible exhustion of The ears are not usually affect-woudpulp, was aptly brought out ed equally, because the infection by Mr. Fox and Mr. Hall, and this concerned may attack one side need has indeed, been emphasised more than the other. Dr. E. B recently by several authorities.

The successful development of arti Dench, professor of otology at the icial silk mangfacture and other New York University, points out cellulose products has, of course, that the reason for this delay is completely changed the outlook of that the patient is usually misled those responsible for afforestation, through the surplus of hearing in and one must face as definite the good ear. high percentage of cellulose, the basis of fibre structure? There ure about 2,000 species of plants which can be regarded as possible sources of usable fibrous raw material, but the qualities required for the pro- duction of a satisfactory fibre zanke the climinating process a drastic one.

'The great causes of progressive impairment of hearing are dis- eases of the mechanism responsi- ble for conducting the sounds through the middle ear, that part which lies just behind the ear drum. These diseases are usually amenable to treatment, partled- larly if seen early.

There are also cases in which the bony tissues surrounding the nerve of hearing become affected and gradually become worse with- out any possibility of benefit. · · ·

Nerve Affection.

Spruce and bamboo have both been suggested as helping to fill the gap, and experiments to test the suitability of many of the others are continually being con- ducted. Here the path is open less to the chemist than to the botanist and the entomologist. The chem- ist can rejoin them when problems Finally, there is the type of of preparation and requisite form deafness that is due to some arise. The path may be a short aflection of the nerve itself, or of one, and it may be interminably that part of the brain which is long. The great thing is to recog associated with hearing. Those nise its existence and explore it types of deafness are difficult to Without undue delay. treat, although a competent ding- nosis may reveal tumour or a type of infection which is amenable to treatment by surgery or by injce- tion of specific remedies into the blood.

It is rather well established that the progressive. impairment of hearing calfed otosclerosis, due to a hardening of the tissues asso- ciated with the hearing, has an hereditary factor. Indeed, '. Dr. Denchi says that it is well estab lished that if either parent has otosclerosis, the "effect upon the hearing of successive generations can be fairly well predicted. He is so certain of this fact that he has advised against marriage of people afflicted with this condition because of the possible effects upon their children.

For years physicians in institu- tions of research have been inves- tigating these matters and at- tempting to find out the definite. causes for various forms of loss of hearing, so that cases may be prevented, rather thon attempts madd to cure. Possibly the sults of this intensive research may mean happier lives for thou- sands of people in the future.

HUMAN CHEMISTS' SHOPS.

INVISIBLE PHYSICIAN IN EVERY BODY.

he-

Professor J. J. Abel, of Johns Hopkins University, has been awarded the William Gibbs medal of the American Chemical So- clely for having done more for human happiness in the opinion of the society, than any other American.

"The human body is a walking chemist's shop,"

declared the professor at the meeting of the society when he was formally pre- sented with the medal.

"Each body has its own little pharmacy that makes the body ro, and each body contains an in- visible physician.

It is a beautiful, wonderful thing, but how long it has taken, to discover that fact! Bio- chemists huve, only skimmed the surface of the chemical poten- tialities of the human body."

Professor Abel proceeded to re- count the history of chemistry as it applies to the well-being of the human body."

He told of centuries long re- search that has brought about the discovery that the human body does contain drugs and chemicals -acids, salts, sugars, and alkalis -in sufficient quantities to sus- tain life indefinitely, provided the source of the drugs is not im- paired.

"The time has come," he said, "for scientists to bend their energies towards isolating the pure drugs in the body from the ductless glands themselves, and to learn how to build up the drugs from various essential chemicals until, it is exactly the same as the gland secretion itself." It is partly for his achievement in doing this with one of the body's pure drugs, adrenalin, that Professor Abel was given the honour of delivering the Gibbs address, and of receiving the Gibbs medal.

ELECTRIC

REFRIGERATION

All of us know that it is difficult to preservé perishable foods for any length of timo. We have learned from experience that they quickly become unfit to eat.

We have found that it is necessary to consume, in a short time, those foods which form a part of our daily diet. Milk, for example, sours very quickly and must be used soon after its delivery.

Fresh meats must be prepared almost immediately after their purchase. Al- though cooking delays bacterial growth, few of us care to use left-overs from day to day.

Berries and other fresh fruits become over-ripe, ferment..and spoil in a short time. Vegetables, too, lose their freshness and original purity very quickly. Cooking delays their deterioration, but at best they must be consumed soon after they are purchased.

FRIGIDAIRE WILL PRESERVE EVEN THE MOST PERISHABLE OF FOODS.
