TROOPS IN CHINA MAY

BE WITHDRAWN.

Sir Auston Chamberlain made a lengthy statement li the House

of Commons yesterday on Britain's general policy abroad, touching the naval conference at Geneva, the retention of a defence force in China, and the attitude adopted towards Russia.

He declared that the British Government was hopeful of agreement at Geneva, and outlined the motive behind the sugge tions for a limitation of the fleets of the Powers, which was motive of general disarmament.

As regards China, there was no intention to keep troops here longer than absolutely necessary, and their recall, when occasion permitted, even in part, would prove that the threat to foreign lives and property had grown less menacing.
