Unusual Shots for Jannings. What is declared to be the most difficult "crack" or moving camera shot ever attempted by a motion picture director has been taken at the Paramount Famous Lasky Studio in Hollywood. The lens first focuses on a close-up of a man reclining in a bed.. He awakes and the camera rises as he comes to a sitting position. He leans over to put on a pair of slippers and the camera is moved down to get a close-up of the action. He arises from his bed and the camera follows him over to a window, then to a mirror on a dressing. table, then through a door, around a right-angle turn down a hall and into a second room, where the man approaches another bed to rouse his sleeping children.
That is precisely what experts said would happen when the stump duty on cheques was raised from a penny, to twopence. But it is in. teresting to note that while the cus- tom of drawing larger inclusive cheques has grown, the. aggregate number of cheques drawn has not fallen off, but, on the contrary, has steadily increased. The high- er duty (twopence) came into force on September 1, 1918, and it is known that in the preceding year the number of cheques issued In 1921 the was 298 millions. number issued had risen to 366 This was, roughly, an millions. average increase of ten millions a year, and if that rate had been maintained the number issued last year would be about 380 millions.
These figures are borne out by, the growing tax yield of the stamp. In the financial year 1917-18, when the stamp was a-penny, the yield was £1,350,000, In the following year, when the duty was twopence, the yield had risen to approximatery £3,000,000; while for the year 1925-26 it was £3,421,684.
